Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Valentines - TMNT - Cookie tutorial

My son had TMNT valentines to give out this year and so I wanted to do cookie to go with as his favor. I have seen lots of TMNT cookies but wanted to just do a simple face and not the whole thing. Some other cookiers gave me ideas and I was just going to do it on a round cookie but then I saw this post on the Semi Sweet blog and knew I had to do heart TMNT's.

I thought I would share my process this time.

What I used:
  • Heart shape cookie cutter
  • Flood icing in green, red, yellow, blue, purple and white
  • Piping icing in black
  • Black sugar peals 4mm
  • Food coloring pen

First make your dough, roll, cut out heart cookies.

Find a picture of a turtle you want to use. I used my KopyKake to trace image of mask onto the cookie using a food coloring pen. I could have just done the icing onto the cookie while under the KK but I think it is faster to just trace onto the cookies then put all cookies on  a pan and then fill them there. Plus you don't have your KK running very long.  You could also cut out template of mask and trace onto cookie.

Outline and fill in the green parts of the face first. Put under a fan for a few minutes to dry. I was doing two dozen cookies, so I just did one step on all the cookies at a time by the time I was done with #24 I could do the next step to the first one and so on.

Next fill with mask with colors red, yellow, blue and purple.

Fill in the eyes with white.

Now here you could use black icing to make the eyes but I just used CK black sugar pearls.
Place in the candy eyes.

Put a dot of white on the black for the eye shine. Let dry for about 20 minutes.

Then pipe the details on with black piping icing.

Let the cookie dry completely for a few hours or over night. Bag and you are ready to go!

I made these early, sealed them and froze them.

Have a Cowabunga Valentines!

Minecraft Cookies & Cake

Is your boy or girl obsessed with Minecraft?? My 7 year old is. If he was allowed to play it all day I just think he might. If you are not sure what Mine Craft is you can click here to find out.
For his birthday he wanted Minecraft cookies so I did a couple different things.

For his treat to take to his class I did some creeper and TNT cookies.

For his small party with friends I made some color canvas cookies that are just white flooded cookies with the coloring image outlined in black icing using the wet on wet method.

Then the kids used edible ink markers to color them they way they wanted.

I had talked to my son and before all these events took place and asked if he wanted a cake for his birthday or cookies and he choose the cookies but on the actual morning of his birthday he said he was excited to have birthday cake that night. I was like "oh I thought the cookies were what you had decided to have." but he said "you have to have cake on your birthday".

Luckily I had some cake frozen in the freezer so I just quickly made a cube shape and the decorated with Melty Bead art!

Icing Smiles iPod Cookie Cake

I belong to a local ICES group which stands for International Cake Exploration Society. I joined the group to learn more about making cakes and making friends who love to play in sugar like me.

Cookies by far are the thing I enjoy doing and I dabble in cakes here and there. Well Icing Smiles contacted this group I belong to and asked for a volunteer to make a cake for a brother of a boy who is suffering from Leukemia. No one else said they were available so I said I would do it.

Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child.  This is actually a awesome opportunity and I was happy to be able to help out this family who is going through a very rough patch in their lives.

The cake I was to make was for a 16 year old boy named Jonus.

His mother told me he loved his iPod, headphones etc..

I originally was going to just do a rectangle cake in the shape of an iPod because I thought it would be simple. But I really want to put in some cookies so I took even a little bit of easier route and made a chocolate cake with chocolate butter-cream and topped it off with some iPod and a teenager listening to some tunes!

It was a little rough making the cake because the filling I had made failed and I had to completely start over on the bottom tier. Luckily I was able to recover and get it done on time.

The cookies up close.

Lately I don't really love covering cakes in fondant but I did make some ear buds out of it to be the border of the cake.

His whole family came by to pick up the cake so I go to meet his parents his younger sister and his little brother who has Lukemia. I really felt so good to be able to provide this service for their family and I hope that the chocolate cake brought a smile to their faces.

If you want to learn more about the Icing Smiles organization please click here. You don't have to be a business to volunteer to those who need these services. This is a country wide organization and they are always looking for some one to donate their time and talents to help those who are suffering from a critical illness.

Breaking Bad / Justin Timberlake

I am part of a little cookie community and they had a sign up to give cookies to each other on our birthdays. I got to do cookies for Lucky Penny! Her birthday was earlier this week. When you sign up you list things you like, your hobbies, and favorite color.

Her favorite color is purple and even though she warned that purple is a big pain in the but to make I decided I would go for it. I have not made purple much before and believe me it was a big pain in the ..... my dark shade just ended up looking black!

Her favorite flower is a lilac, so this is my version.

I contacted her friend Jill to find out some other details about her than what she had listed and found out that she loves JT (Justin Timberlake) pretty sure that he has a few fans!

Another love is tennis. I decided to give my tennis ball a little textured look like they actually have.

And it was her birthday so of course we needed some cake!

Another gem I learned from her friend was that she was a big fan of the TV show Breaking Bad, I have not seen it but I might just have to check it out to see what all the hype is about.

She is a Cubs fan and yest these are not their colors but I was using a certain color scheme. :)

I sure hope that Penny had the most amazing birthday!!

Tiggers Picnic for a Terrific Woman!

Here is the other set of cookies I did for the winning bidder of the cookie auction I participated in this month.

My good friend Laura and my number one cookie fan was the winning bidder on the first cookie auction I sponsored. She is a selfless woman who is always willing to do anything for her friends and family. She is such a good example to me and love the times when we get to hang out!!

I asked her what theme of cookies she wanted and she just gave me free reign.

I remembered her mentioning a long time ago that as a kid her favorite story book character was Tigger from Whinnie the Pooh. So I decided to do Tigger cookies for her and I decided that Tigger was going to go on a picnic.

So here they are.

Got to have watermelon at a picnic.

Some of the things Tigger might say while at this picnic.

Tigger himself!

And the picnic blanket & ants. :)

Thank you Laura for helping out the victims in Mooore OK, you are a hero!!

Cake #1 & Cookies - Lalaloopsy

Friday was a busy day for me I decorated 3 cakes and some cookies. This is #1 of 3.

My previous neighbor called me a couple weeks ago and asked if I could do a Lalaloopsy cake and cookies for her daughters 6th birthday. She sent me a picture of what she was looking for and the cookie picture I knew immediately was Sweet Sugarbelle's creation. I knew I could do the cookies no problem thanks to Caylee's tutorial on them found here.

I simplified the cake design she sent me into something I knew I could do.
I was quite happy that I got sharper edges on this cake than I have in the past. I took Jessicakes tutorial recently on craftsy.com and it was a great help.

This was a chocolate cake with vanilla SMBC, which I used for the first time and it was really easy to work with but I think ganache would be better to get razor sharp edges. I covered the cakes with homemade marshmallow fondant and used modeling chocolate instead of fondant for the decorations it is way easier to work with!

I think it turned out cute.

The cookies are pretty darn cute if I say so myself.

I hope that Izabel had a great birthday and thanks to Myrna for the order. In the other pictures I forgot to but the ribbon on the cake so here is a shot with it on.

Cars Birthday

My good friends little girl turned 3 and she loves Cars and Lightning McQueen. She wanted to have some cookies for the party so the racing flag, lightning bolt and McQueen eyes are what we did.

May the force be with you Mikko!

Today is my husbands birthday! Happy 37th to you honey! Mikko is a wonderful husband and father and since I have been decorating cookies like this I have yet to do a set just for him. So I figured I would finally use some of the Star Wars cookie cutters I have had for a couple of months. I have eight of them, I used a couple of them a month or so ago, you can see them here.

My hubby is a Star Wars fan of course. What man is not? I know there are a few who could care less but it pretty much is a given that guys like Star Wars. I made him a platter of these to take to his work today so that he could share them with his co-workers who I hope think they are just as cool as Mikko does.

Hopefully they actually make it to work and that Mikko does not eat them on the train ride into downtown!

Cookies help keeping in touch!

I friend of mine, Melissa, that I have not seen in over three years contacted me a couple of weeks ago and asked me to do some cookies for her fiance's birthday. I was so glad she called me it was so nice to catch up with her and get to visit with her again and to find out she was engaged and for hear about the wonderful guy that has entered her life.

Her fiance's favorite cartoon character is Snoopy so we decided these two designs would be great. I did not have cutters for these but since I was only do 6 each design I just made a template and cut them out by hand.

I was told he really liked them and I am so glad that my this sweet hobby of mine sparked her to call me so that we could get in contact once again!

Star Wars....Peaches....Shabbat Market

The winner from my sweet giveaway over a month ago decided she wanted to gift her prize to her newly married cousin. I thought that was sweet. Both of their birthday's were in the past couple of weeks so we waited to send them the prize.  She said the husband liked star wars and the wife liked peaches so these are the cookies I did for them.

I decided to sell some of my goodies at a Shabbat Market at a local Jewish Community Center. It did not have a great turn out but I was glad for the experience. I made these star of David cookies.

Some Halloween theme cookies which after I got there to set up, the lady in charge said "oh I forgot to tell you that you can't sell anything that is holiday themed."..... Lame.

But I think they turned out really cute anyway.

I also made some yummy chocolate cupcakes with "The best frosting I ever tasted" on them as well as triple salted caramel cupcakes but forgot to take a picture of the.

We ate the left overs over the weekend and shared them with family members and neighbors!!!
